Useful random quotes

"Presidentialism is ineluctably problematic because it operates according to the rule of “winner-take-all—-an arrangement that tends to make democratic politics a zero-sum game, with all the potential for conflict such games portend. Although parliamentary elections can produce an absolute majority for a single party, they more often give representation to a number of parties. Power-sharing and coalition-forming are fairly common, and incumbents are accordingly attentive to the demands and interests of even the smaller parties. "

Rules of Thumb

Do not be fooled by the falsehood that claims that Federalism will mean higher taxes. Really? Compare the unitary Philippines against federalist Malaysia. The Philippines has higher taxes. Federalist Malaysia has lower taxes. Compare the unitary Sweden against federalist Switzerland. Once again, the federalist one - Switzerland - has lower taxes than its federalist counterpart, Sweden. The same with unitary Netherlands when compared against the federalist Germany. Again, federalist Germany has lower taxes than its unitary next door neighbor the Netherlands.
